The HYPHY NORTHWEST Conference is an ode to the hyphy culture in the bay area. “Hyphy” is an Oakland slang meaning “hyperactive.” More specifically, it is an adjective describing the Hip Hop music and the culture associated with the area. The term was first coined by Oakland rapper Keak da Sneak. The word’s popular usage refers to the music and vibe of the bay — wild, loud, and exciting. Hyphy emerged in early 2000 and by 2009 evolved into a counter-cultural social movement for marginalized youth. The HYPHY NORTHWEST Conference celebrates the history of this Hip Hop subgenre with the new Hyphy sound for the new generation.
